President Barack Obama stated the outbreak of swine
flu had created a "serious situation" in the
United States requiring the "utmost precautions,"
after the first US death from H1N1.
"This is obviously a serious situation, serious enough
to take the utmost precautions," the president said.
In response to the intensifying outbreak, the World
Health Organization raised the worldwide pandemic alert
level to Phase 5. A Phase 5 alert is a “strong signal
that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize
the organization, communication, and implementation of
the planned mitigation measures is short.” Act now....
The number of closed schools more than doubled overnight
to nearly 300 when the Fort Worth Independent School District
in Texas announced it was closing its 140 schools, affecting
about 80,000 students. High schools sports were suspended
in Texas and Alabama.
